Understanding Basic Statistics

A guide to what the numbers from the calculator mean.

The mean is the most common measure of the center of a data set, often simply called the "average." It gives you a single number that summarizes the entire data set's central value.

When is it used? Teachers use it to find the average class score, businesses use it to determine average customer satisfaction, and scientists use it to find the central tendency of experimental data.

Mean Formula

To find the mean, you add up all the numbers in the data set and then divide by the count of those numbers.

Mean (x̄) = Sum of all values (Σx) / Count of values (n)
